A Minecraft Movie has just made history. The live-action film based on the beloved sandbox video game has opened to a massive $301 million worldwide during its debut weekend — that's around £233 million. In the US alone, the film earned $157 million (£121.5 million), making it the biggest domestic opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation.
That means A Minecraft Movie beat out past favorites like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and even came close to the phenomenal success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which launched with $377 million globally. Given that the Minecraft film had a budget of $150 million (£115.7 million), it has already made back its cost — and then some — in just three days.
The cast, led by Jack Black, posed in dramatic battle-ready stances for promo shots, holding various weapons that reflect the adventurous spirit of the game. The film combines action, humor, and the imaginative world of Minecraft in a way that both kids and long-time fans can enjoy.
Despite its commercial success, not everyone was fully convinced. Eurogamer’s Chris Donlan gave it 3 out of 5 stars, saying:
“Minecraft hardly needs a film in the first place – it’s already a phenomenon… perhaps the film this game truly deserves is still waiting to be made.”
Still, audiences seem to be loving it. At the premiere, Jack Black shared his view on the film's purpose:
“What the world needs now is love, sweet love.”
And maybe that’s why A Minecraft Movie is resonating so strongly — it offers something fun, hopeful, and familiar at a time when people need it most.
With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 holding the second-highest box office record for a game adaptation at $491 million, all eyes are now on Minecraft to see how high it can climb. Could it be the next billion-dollar video game movie?
