UPDATE : There is added confusion over Silent Hill f's classification in Australia. The rating reported below has been removed, and the Australian Classification Board has confirmed it has not actually been rated at this point.
Konami’s upcoming horror title, Silent Hill f, has been officially banned in Australia after failing to receive an age rating from the country’s classification board. The game’s intense and unsettling themes reportedly exceed the maximum allowed content for even mature audiences.
According to its Steam page, Silent Hill f explores very sensitive topics such as child abuse, drug-induced hallucinations, excessive violence, and torture. Graphic material of this sort has led to refusal of classification, effectively excluding the game from release in Australia.
This is also a historic first for the franchise since Silent Hill f is the only entry to receive an 18+ rating in Japan as well. The ESRB warned against especially graphic depictions, including torn faces and a character being burned alive.
The ban has sparked debate among horror fans, with some defending the artistic vision behind the game, while others question the necessity of such extreme content. Whether Konami will alter the game to meet Australian classification standards remains uncertain.
