Disney+ is developing a new live-action Power Rangers series, reports The Wrap. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, executive producers of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, are in negotiations to write, produce, and executive the show for Disney+ and 20th Century TV.
Owner of the Power Rangers property Hasbro wants to reboot the franchise and update it for contemporary audiences without driving away its dedicated fans. The company hopes to re-launch the series in a way that will resonate with present-day viewers but not forget about its fan base.
First emerging back in the 1990s, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was a sensation, shaping a generation's children. In 2018, Hasbro took over the brand Power Rangers among other intellectual assets belonging to the former owner Saban Properties within a $522 million deal. At the time, Hasbro said it had extremely good faith in the prospects of the brand, noting it would invest into developing and growing the franchise on exciting and fresh ways.
