The much-anticipated God of War series is gaining momentum, as Amazon Prime Video has already ordered two seasons prior to the debut of the first one. This says a great deal regarding the streaming giant's confidence in the show, especially following smash hit game-to-TV adaptations like The Last of Us, Fallout, and Arcane.
First revealed towards the end of 2022, the God of War franchise encountered some early development setbacks. A series of scripts were written prior to Sony and Amazon deciding on a different creative direction. Fortunately, the franchise found its footing when Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica mastermind Ronald Moore was brought in as showrunner in 2024. His involvement reassured fans who were eager for a loyal adaptation of the popular PlayStation gaming franchise.
Not a game player himself, Moore has nonetheless expressed enthusiasm for the project. He has assembled a team of franchise veterans and is working closely with Santa Monica Studio to stay faithful to the original games.
During an interview for The Sackhoff Show with Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff, Moore revealed that two seasons of God of War had already been commissioned by Amazon. "I'm literally in the writer's room working on it," he went on, emphasizing that the show is very much in production.
Moore also admitted that he’s not well-versed in modern gaming, as he grew up in the arcade era of the 1980s. While he plans to familiarize himself with God of War, he jokingly mentioned his struggles with modern controllers, saying, "Press R1 wait, which one’s R1? Oh, I’m dead!"
Whereas Amazon's commitment to two seasons highlights utmost confidence in the project, it is yet to be seen if the adaptation will live up to The Last of Us in the narrative of long-term storytelling. Casting reveals and additional news will emerge shortly, keeping fans on their toes for what's coming next.
Until then, God of War enthusiasts can look forward to a labor of love series that will reproduce Kratos' mythical journey to the screen in the way and extent of reverence it deserves.
