The new Warner Bros. and Legendary film, "A Minecraft Movie," was a surprise hit when it raked in a staggering $157 million at the box office during its first weekend. It's the year's highest domestic open, but also the largest video game-themed film ever.
Prior to its opening, insiders had predicted the fantasy comedy, which is for all ages, would earn between $70 million and $90 million. However, due to high expectations from the fans, the worldwide craze of the best-selling video game Minecraft, and the popularity of actors Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the movie shattered all predictions.
The movie stormed not just the American marketplace. Abroad, it collected an additional $144 million, for a worldwide total of $301 million in its first weekend. Costing $150 million, the movie has already earned more than its production expense, not counting pre-boxoffice or pre-merchandise.
The film grossed a tremendous $58 million from its domestic open, showing just how strong the Minecraft brand is even a year later, let alone a dozen, since the game first catapulted into popular culture in 2011.
Minecraft, the game from which the movie takes its origins, has also remained one of the most popular, best-selling video games of all time. First launched in 2011, the sandbox-style game lets users dive in, build, and survive in a blocky, pixelated world.
The most distinctive feature in Minecraft from the rest is its infinite creativity potential. Players can build from a mere house up to entire cities, alongside battling monsters, exploring caves, and crafting tools. Minecraft is a game for everyone, having single or multi-player options, thus gaining global recognition.
With more than 300 million copies sold and a huge global following, no wonder a Minecraft movie would spark so much excitement and bring such large crowds to the cinema.
