The Last of Us Scores Season 3 Renewal Just Before Season 2 Launch

Just days before its highly anticipated Season 2 premiere on April 13, HBO’s hit drama The Last of Us has officially been renewed for Season 3. The announcement solidifies the network’s commitment to one of its most successful and critically acclaimed shows.

Based on the best-selling video game franchise by Naughty Dog and PlayStation, The Last of Us follows the emotional and intense journey of Joel and Ellie through a post-apocalyptic world. Season 2 continues the story five years after Season 1, taking inspiration from the 2020 video game sequel The Last of Us: Part II.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey return as Joel and Ellie, facing new dangers and personal challenges in a world where survival comes at a cost. The new season will explore deeper emotional struggles and introduce powerful new characters.

Returning cast members include Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Season 2 also welcomes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Comedy legend Catherine O’Hara will also appear as Joel’s therapist.

Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama, praised the team’s work, saying,

“It can’t be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of The Last of Us is.”

Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, who also worked together on the video game series, shared their excitement for what’s ahead.

“We approached Season 2 with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals,” Mazin said.

Druckmann added,

“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight. We’re thrilled to bring you more.”

Season 2 is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television, written and executive produced by Mazin and Druckmann, alongside Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells. Halley Gross, who co-wrote The Last of Us: Part II, returns as writer and co-executive producer.

The new season premieres on April 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, with episodes streaming on Max every Sunday.

Fans can expect more emotional storytelling, intense action, and a gripping continuation of Joel and Ellie’s journey in what promises to be another unforgettable season.
