A Minecraft Movie has taken the box office by storm, opening with a massive $301 million worldwide, making it one of 2025’s biggest cinematic surprises. Now, fans may have even more to look forward to, as the director hints at a possible sequel.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, director Jared Hess expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the Minecraft universe.
"It’d be so much fun," Hess said. "The world’s infinite. So many amazing mods, characters, and biomes we haven’t explored yet—it’d be amazing."
His statement has fueled speculation that a sequel may already be in early discussions.
The first film follows four unlikely heroes:
They’re transported into the blocky Minecraft world, where they team up with Steve, the classic game character played by Jack Black.
Much of the film is set in the Overworld, but it also explores the dangerous Nether, a dark dimension ruled by Piglins—human-like, gold-obsessed creatures.
Director Hess called them:
"Super gnarly, funny, gross, and strange."
"They’ve got a unique barbarian culture. They're obsessed with gold. They’re just fun villains."
Adding to the buzz, A Minecraft Movie features both a mid-credit and a post-credit scene. The final tease introduces a mysterious and iconic character from the game, suggesting future storylines may already be planned.
Though Warner Bros. hasn’t officially confirmed a sequel, the strong performance and audience reactions speak volumes.
Despite receiving a 47% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a solid 87% audience score, proving that fans have embraced the heart and humor of the story.
Audiences are sharing their favorite scenes online, especially the emotional moments and in-jokes made for Minecraft players.
One social media user summed it up best:
"A Minecraft Movie is the perfect turn-your-brain-off film. Tons of heart, made for the fans."
Released the same weekend as Disney’s live-action Snow White, A Minecraft Movie far outperformed expectations. While Snow White earned only $87 million globally, Minecraft more than tripled that figure.
Jennifer Coolidge, who plays a character romantically involved with Nitwit the Villager, surprised fans by calling the role:
"The most I’ve ever been attracted to a character. Certainly turned on."
Her quirky romance with the Villager became a fan-favorite subplot, adding even more charm to the movie.
With its massive fanbase, viral success, and blockbuster box office numbers, A Minecraft Movie is looking more and more like the start of a franchise.
And with Jared Hess and the cast on board, fans can only hope that another adventure is already being crafted—block by block.
