One of the all-time classics when it comes to FPS games is still Counter-Strike 1.6, and now an avid fan-created project named CS: Legacy is to revive its timelessness on the surface in an updated standalone version. More than a remastered release, the remake has been rebuilt entirely to preserve the gameplay feel of the original game with updated graphics and optimizations.
Legacy is not a straightforward graphic remake—a remake of the entire Counter-Strike 1.6, done in a manner so it still has the very same mechanics, physics, and gun feel that have made the original game a legend. The game will be on Steam, so it will be accessible to existing players, as well as a completely new generation of FPS gamers.
In all the fuss surrounding CS: Legacy, there is one major elephant in the room. It is a fan-made, unofficial project and not a Valve product. Valve does have a history of closing fan remakes such as Portal 64 and Team Fortress: Source 2, so it leaves one to ponder if CS: Legacy will suffer the same outcome.
CS: Legacy's future depends on its ability to avoid copyright and intellectual property issues. Short of flat-out legal confrontations with Valve, however, the game could flourish as a hobbyist-driven revival of one of the biggest competitive shooters of all time. Until then, all one can do is hope it will be possible to get Counter-Strike 1.6 in a contemporary and stand-alone format. Stay tuned for further updates on what is going to happen to CS: Legacy and whether it is going to be a durable success story or just a casualty to Valve's legal position.
