There has been a rumor going around that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) and Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) would be re-released soon, and this has got the fans excited. Even though Activision is yet to confirm this, recent events have indicated that the two classic games might be returning soon.
On April 3, the Australian Classification Board published both MW2 and MW3 as cross-gen releases, and specifically identified MW2 by the PS5 designation. Both of the games received the MA 15+ rating, which is typically given to action-packed games like Call of Duty. No other information regarding the re-releases was forthcoming. This does little more than leave fans questioning, but it also leads to anticipation of new versions of the original games.
Though the listings don’t specify whether or not these will be remasters or just re-releases, the fact that they use the numbers "2" and "3" (instead of Roman numerals) implies that these could be editions of the original Xbox 360 and PS3 titles, and not the newer reboots of the Modern Warfare franchise.
A remaster is not out of the question. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was re-released in 2016 with improved graphics and audio, allowing the original campaign to be replayed in an enhanced form. It could be the same for MW2 and MW3, but so far, nothing has been officially announced.
There’s no official release date for the re-releases yet. As things stand, however, cross-gen releases for both games heavily imply that Activision is looking to release them on next-gen and current consoles. 2025 seems reasonable at this point, based on what we've seen, but fans will need to wait for official announcements.
It’s also notable that MW2's campaign was remastered in 2020, even if that release did not encompass the multiplayer component. Additionally, Modern Warfare III (2023) included the return of many of MW2's classic multiplayer maps, which could potentially be leveraged for a future remaster, further increasing the hopes for a prospective complete package.
While re-releases of MW2 and MW3 have yet to be officially announced, there remains a lot going on in the Call of Duty world. Black Ops 6 just dropped its Season 3 content update, which involved restoring the Verdansk map from Warzone. Fans of Call of Duty have lots to anticipate before they find out what's in store for MW2 and MW3.
